European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced the EU’s Copernicus system is available to aid Colombia’s rescue operations.
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Chocó region of northwestern Colombia on the morning of 10 August, killing at least 164 people and injuring more than 570. The epicentre lay five kilometres east of San José del Palmar, at a depth of 107 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey. The EU moved quickly.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the activation of Copernicus, the EU’s Earth-observation satellite system, to support search and rescue efforts. “Tonight, the heart of Europe is with the people of Colombia after the terrible earthquake in the Chocó region. We have already mobilised Copernicus, our satellite service, to help in the rescue operations,” she said. Ms von der Leyen added that the EU stood ready to offer more help to the South American country.
Satellites put to work
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella confirmed 111 dead and 87 injured in an initial assessment, before the toll rose sharply by Tuesday morning. He declared a national emergency after a meeting of the National Committee for Disaster Management, and said the government had deployed all available resources to protect lives, assist affected communities, and provide emergency relief.
Copernicus is not a single satellite but a whole chain of components. It combines space-based observations, existing national and commercial satellites, ground and aerial measurements, data distribution infrastructure, and core geoinformation services. In a disaster, that chain produces rapid damage maps and situational assessments — exactly the kind of information rescue teams need on the ground.

The system works as a pipeline: observe, downlink, process, publish, reuse. Satellites collect raw observations; ground systems process them; Copernicus services then convert the results into maps, alerts, time series, and indicators, and distribute them freely to users. All Copernicus data and products are intended to be freely available to everyone.
The core of the system is the Sentinel family of satellites, each built for a different task. Sentinel-1 uses C-band radar (allowing it to image day and night, through clouds and bad weather) with a revisit time of about six days at the equator. Sentinel-2 now consists of three satellites in the same orbit, giving wide coverage and high revisit frequency for land-change monitoring. In Chocó, where cloud cover is persistent, radar imaging is particularly valuable.
The scale of the task
The destruction across Colombia was severe. At least 1,575 homes, 18 health centres, and 52 schools sustained damage. Sixty-one buildings collapsed, 18 roads were affected, and seven airports were hit. Six of them suspended commercial operations. The earthquake was also felt in Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela, and buildings were evacuated in Bogotá, the country’s capital.
The EU’s activation of Copernicus represents an immediate and concrete contribution, delivered before any longer-term aid commitments could take shape. The system—managed by the European Space Agency, EUMETSAT, and EU partners—can serve many users at once, from flood responders and climate scientists to marine and air-quality analysts. Directing it towards Colombia placed its full capabilities at the disposal of rescue teams on the ground.
Ms von der Leyen’s message was clear: the EU was not merely watching. It had tools, it deployed them, and it signalled readiness to do more. Whether that offer translates into further assistance remains to be seen. But for a country counting its dead, the satellites were already overhead.
