European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has said that the Iranian regime is “on its last legs” and urged EU leaders to take stronger action as authorities continue a violent crackdown on nationwide protests. Arrests, repression, and attacks on demonstrators have drawn growing concern across Europe.

In a TV interview on Wednesday, Ms Metsola stressed that while the Iranian people must decide their own future, the EU had a duty to defend fundamental freedoms and act against abuses. As a top representative, she has already banned Iranian diplomats from entering the European Parliament. She also called on all member states to designate the IRGC a terrorist organisation.

Decisive action

Her comments underline the European Parliament’s push for decisive EU action — combining diplomatic pressure with support for civil society — while asserting the bloc’s independence in defending human rights. On X, Ms Metsola posted a video where she stated that 2026 had to be the year when dictatorships came to an end, writing also that it was time for freedom in Iran. Hundreds of Iranians have been killed in the crackdown on protestors; the Iranian leadership is chillingly also threatening to execute jailed opponents of the regime to try and crush opposition.
