Today’s solar eclipse will shut down the equivalent of nine large nuclear reactors for an hour. European power operators are ready, and they want you to know it.

The event is unusual but not unmanageable. Under clear-sky conditions, photovoltaic output could decrease by up to 9.7 GW across Europe between 19:15 and 21:30 CEST. That is roughly three to four per cent of Europe’s installed solar capacity. That is a s if you switched off nine large nuclear reactors at once, though only for just over sixty minutes.

The real challenge is not the volume of power lost but the speed of the change. Germany, which has Europe’s largest solar fleet, could see output plunge and rebound at a rate of approximately 13.6 GW per hour. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom face ramps of around 6.2 GW and 4.4 GW per hour, respectively.

Dimming across the continent

Solar energy now accounts for approximately 13 per cent of EU electricity generation. Spain and Germany are expected to experience the highest impact, based on the expected decrease in photovoltaic production. France, Italy, and the Netherlands also face partial eclipses of between 70 and 90 per cent of the Sun’s disc.

Europe’s grids are tightly interconnected. A dip in Spanish output can, within seconds, be offset by spare capacity in France or pumped-storage hydro in Austria. The 40 member transmission system operators (TSOs) of ENTSO-E—the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, the association responsible for the secure and coordinated operation of Europe’s electricity system—treat the continent as one large, shared balancing pool.

That interconnection is central to the response. “Thanks to well-established coordination mechanisms and proactive preparations, ENTSO-E and Europe’s Transmission System Operators are ready to ensure the secure and stable operation of the electricity system throughout the event,” the association said on 7 August.

Preparations began well before today. Fast-responding gas turbines, hydro units, and battery storage have been pre-scheduled to ramp up as the Sun fades and ramp back down as it returns. TSOs are avoiding planned grid outages during the eclipse period to maximise operational flexibility. Maintenance work that would otherwise take lines or substations out of service has been postponed.

Reserves and forecasts

Control room operators have been briefed in advance to ensure heightened awareness, while market participants have received information on the expected reduction in solar generation. Local system operators are receiving additional updated photovoltaic generation forecasts from weather service providers to support real-time decision-making.

ENTSO-E has also activated a dedicated task force to coordinate preparations, monitor developments, and facilitate information exchange among TSOs before and after the event. The timing and depth of the eclipse are known to the second, which allows dispatch schedules to be refined using satellite and weather data on cloud cover.

Grid managers are candid that today’s event is also a learning exercise. Solar’s share of the European electricity mix keeps rising. Eclipses, sudden cloud banks, and other weather-driven swings will become routine operational challenges rather than exceptional ones.

What consumers will feel

The short answer is: very little. No blackouts are expected. The eclipse is short, predictable, and thoroughly planned for. It falls near sunset, when solar output is already winding down naturally. Price movements on intraday electricity markets should therefore be modest and brief.

In Spain and Portugal, where midday solar abundance sometimes pushes wholesale prices below zero, the eclipse may simply nudge prices back toward zero for an hour, rather than produce sharp spikes. Ample evening gas and hydro capacity stands ready to fill any gap.

The system is ready. Europe’s 40 TSOs represent 36 countries, operating the largest interconnected electrical grid in the world. They have lined up the reserves, postponed the maintenance, and briefed the control rooms. Consumers can watch the eclipse; the grid will look after itself. Or so the hope goes.
