The EU Council has approved a new €15m support package for the Albanian Armed Forces, marking the second bilateral measure under the European Peace Facility. This latest funding raises the total EU assistance to Albania’s defence sector to €28m. The package aims to enhance the military’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to emerging security challenges.

High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas highlighted Albania’s strategic importance in a statement:

“Albania is a close and consistent foreign and security policy partner of the EU, a contributor to EU operations, and a NATO ally. Strengthening our security and defence cooperation with Albania directly reinforces European stability, security, and peace.”

EU commitment

This decision follows the signing of a Security and Defence Partnership last November and the launch of a Security and Defence Dialogue earlier in 2025. Both underscore the EU’s continued commitment to strengthening relations with Albania.

As an official EU candidate country, Albania’s efforts to bolster its defence capabilities are seen as a vital step toward aligning with EU standards and reinforcing its role as a reliable partner in regional security. The assistance should help Albania improve its ability to participate in the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and other international operations. The package includes light armoured multipurpose as well as tactical and engineering vehicles. It also includes related supplies and training to ensure operational readiness.
